I Will Use You: I Stand at the Door, Day 30

The members of my body are not bad persons; they are asleep. They must be awakened by the excitement of a new kind of life, by a word of witness to the reality of my presence, by the presence of the Spirit in you. Will you permit me to sow the seeds of the kingdom through your hands? Will you let the awareness of my presence spread through your witness and example? Will you reach out and touch those sleeping?

– Ben Johnson, I Stand at the Door, CTS Press, 1986, 19.

11   But make sure that you don’t get so absorbed and exhausted in taking care of all your day-by-day obligations that you lose track of the time and doze off, oblivious to God. 12 The night is about over, dawn is about to break. Be up and awake to what God is doing! God is putting the finishing touches on the salvation work he began when we first believed.

Romans 13:11-12 The Message

Can you think of a period in your life when you felt really alive and awake to God’s presence and action? Can you think of a period when you know you were asleep to those same things? How would you characterize the difference? Where do you find yourself now?

Gracious God,
Help me to awake to your presence in my life
and your call upon it.
Help me to enliven your body,
by first drawing near to you,
and then bearing witness to you as I live my life.
Help me to trust your salvation’s power,
you desire to work through me and others like me,
to bring forth your kingdom,
you dream for each of our lives
and for this world.
