Serve with Me – At Work: I Stand at the Door, Day 17

Your calling of service can be effectively expressed through your vocation. I have no desire to make of you a religious fanatic who puts piety on display. Rather, I call you to fulfill the task of your profession. Be the best worker and producer that you can be. Only as you do your assigned task well do you earn the right to talk about me. If you, for example, are a slovenly worker, your fellow workers will sneer at your witness for me. Bu when you are a loyal producer, they will then take note of what you say. I work through your work.

– Ben Johnson, I Stand at the Door, CTS Press, 1986, 11.

Jesus said to them, “The harvest is bigger than you can imagine, but there are few workers. Therefore, plead with the Lord of the harvest to send out workers for his harvest.”

Luke 10:2

Spend time thinking about how you can serve God at work. If you are living in retirement or don’t have a traditional job, help define what your vocation is now and how you can serve God through it.  How is God calling you to spend your days and how might you serve God in the midst of them?

Holy Lord,
The harvest is indeed plentiful.
There are so many in this world,
who you long to catch up in your love and grace.
Help me to see how I can work for you,
not just part-time,
but with my every breath,
in every situation,
as I seek to further your Kingdom in the here and now.
Amen
