Advent Devotional Luke 12

Luke 12

Scripture Focus:
“Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.”
Luke 12:32 (NRSVUE)

Reflection

Luke 12 is full of Jesus’ teachings about priorities—about what we treasure, what we fear, and what we trust. He speaks about ravens and lilies, barns and treasures, anxiety and abundance. In the middle of it all, He offers a tender reassurance: “Do not be afraid, little flock.”

It’s such a gentle phrase—one that reminds us who we are and whose we are. We are not forgotten or unseen; we are loved and cared for by a generous God who delights in giving us the kingdom.

Advent has a way of uncovering our fears—the fear of not having enough, of not being enough, of losing control. But Jesus calls us back to trust. He invites us to loosen our grip on what fades and open our hands to what endures. The kingdom He gives isn’t built on wealth or worry—it’s built on love, mercy, and grace.

As we move through this season, may we remember that God’s good pleasure is not to burden us, but to bless us. The Shepherd who calls us “little flock” is the same one who leads us into peace.

Prayer

Loving Shepherd,
You calm our fears and quiet our anxious hearts.
In a world that tells us to cling and to strive,
teach us instead to rest in Your care.
Remind us that it is Your joy to give us the kingdom—
a kingdom of grace, generosity, and peace.
Help us live with open hands and trusting hearts,
following wherever You lead.
Amen.

Practice

Today, notice one area of your life where worry tends to take over.
Pause and imagine placing that worry in God’s hands.
Breathe deeply and repeat the words of Jesus:
“Do not be afraid, little flock.”

Then, as a sign of trust, do one simple act of generosity—
share your time, give something away, or speak an encouraging word.
Each act of trust becomes a way of saying:
“I believe in the goodness of the Shepherd.”
