Serve with Me Freely: I Stand at the Door, Day 21

Remember, I don’t ever want you to share unwillingly in my service to the world. Listen to what I say. I have no slaves, no reluctant servants. Don’t think of serving to earn my approval. It won’t work. I have already given you my unconditional acceptance with no effort on your part. Join me in my service to the world for love – love for me and love for the world. Nothing else is acceptable.

When you join me in service to the world out of love, I will be in you. You will become my flesh and blood presence to human need. I will speak love through your voice; I will show love though your touch; I will communicate love through your embrace.

But more. As you speak, you will discover my ears in the brother in need. When you reach out and touch a sister, you will touch me. And in embracing another in my name, you will find yourself embraced in my arms. In giving you will receive; in dying you will live. Remember, I stand by the door asking you to serve with me!

– Ben Johnson, I Stand at the Door, CTS Press, 1986, 13.

12  This is my commandment: love each other just as I have loved you.  13  No one has greater love than to give up one’s life for one’s friends.  14  You are my friends if you do what I command you.  15  I don’t call you servants any longer, because servants don’t know what their master is doing. Instead, I call you friends, because everything I heard from my Father I have made known to you.  16  You didn’t choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you could go and produce fruit and so that your fruit could last. As a result, whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will give you.  17  I give you these commandments so that you can love each other.

John 15:12-17

Spend time asking God to allow you to simply rest in God’s love for you.  Once you can receive and accept that you are freely loved, you will be set free to love others in the same way.  Without condition, or need of something in return, or superficially – but with a genuine, deep, limitless love that is given in freedom.

Holy Lord,
Help me to accept your love for me.
To not only know about it in my head,
but to let it sink into the depths of me,
marrow-deep,
so that it defines me above all else.
Lord, in receiving your love,
I will find my freedom.
In the discovery of my freedom,
I will be able to serve you in love for your world.
Holy God, I long for this,
help it be so.
Amen
