Luke 22
Scripture Focus:
“Then he took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’”
— Luke 22:19 (NRSVUE)
Reflection
In Luke 22, the story slows down. The noise of the crowds fades, and we find Jesus gathered with His closest friends around a table. Bread is broken. A cup is shared. Love takes shape in a simple meal.
The disciples don’t yet understand that this supper will become a symbol for all time—an act of remembrance and promise. In this moment, Jesus gives Himself completely. He turns an ordinary table into holy ground.
Advent draws us here too—to a table of grace. The One whose birth we celebrate is the same One who offers His life for the world. Every time we break bread in His name, we proclaim that love stronger than fear, forgiveness stronger than sin, and life stronger than death are already at work among us.
This chapter reminds us that preparing for Christ’s coming isn’t just about celebration—it’s also about communion. It’s about remembering that Christ still meets us in shared meals, in humble service, and in the breaking of bread.
Prayer
Holy God,
You meet us at the table with love and mercy.
As Jesus broke bread and poured the cup,
He gave us a way to remember and to live in Your grace.
Nourish our faith as we wait for Your coming.
Strengthen us to serve with compassion,
to forgive as we have been forgiven,
and to share the love that was broken and poured out for us all.
Amen.
Practice
Take time today to sit at your own table—
even if only for a few quiet minutes.
Before you eat, pause and give thanks for Christ’s presence.
Whisper these words:
“Do this in remembrance of Me.”
Let your meal, however simple, become holy ground.
And as you eat, pray for those who hunger—
for food, for hope, for peace.
Advent begins at the table,
where love is made visible and shared.
