Advent Devotional Luke 14

Luke 14

Scripture Focus:
“Then the master said to the slave, ‘Go out into the roads and lanes, and compel people to come in, so that my house may be filled.’”
Luke 14:23 (NRSVUE)

Reflection

Jesus often used meals to teach about God’s kingdom—and in Luke 14, He tells a story about a banquet where the guest list takes a surprising turn. Those first invited make excuses, so the host sends servants out into the streets to gather anyone and everyone: the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.

The message is clear—God’s table is bigger than we imagine. No one is left out, and everyone has a seat. The kingdom is not a closed circle; it’s an ever-widening invitation.

Advent reminds us that the One we await—the Christ child—came to make room for all. He shared meals with outcasts and strangers, showing us that love is never exclusive. The table of grace is not for the perfect or the prepared—it’s for the hungry and the hopeful.

As we prepare our homes and hearts this season, may we remember that God’s feast is still being set, and the invitation still stands: “Come, for everything is ready.”

Prayer

Generous God,
You welcome us with open arms and a ready table.
When we make excuses or turn away,
You still invite us again and again.
Help us to live with that same generosity—
to make room for others,
to share what we have,
and to extend hospitality that reflects Your heart.
Let our lives become invitations to Your feast of grace.
Amen.

Practice

As you share meals this week—at your table, at work, or in the community—
take a moment to notice who might need an extra seat.
Is there someone you could invite in, include, or reach out to?

You might offer a literal invitation to dinner
or simply create space for someone to feel seen and valued.
Each time you widen your circle,
you echo the hospitality of the kingdom.
