— Luke 2:10–11 (NRSVUE)
Reflection
Every December, as lights fill our streets and carols fill the air, we return to this story—the night when the world changed forever. Luke 2 tells us that Jesus was born in the most unlikely of places: not in a palace, but in a manger. Not surrounded by royalty, but by shepherds who were just doing their night’s work.
And yet, heaven chose them to receive the first announcement.
The angels’ words still echo: Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy.
This is the heart of Advent. God breaks into the ordinary—into the quiet, the overlooked, the waiting places of our lives—and brings good news that changes everything. The manger reminds us that no place is too small, no heart too humble, for Christ to enter in.
Perhaps the invitation this season is to pause long enough to notice where God might be showing up in unexpected ways. Maybe joy is being born in the midst of your own crowded schedule, your own anxious thoughts, your own quiet longings.
Don’t be afraid to look for it.
Joy has come near.
Prayer
God of Joy,
You surprise us with good news in the midst of ordinary days.
You draw near in places we least expect—
a manger, a field, a quiet heart.
Calm our fears,
open our eyes to wonder,
and fill us with the same joy that sent the shepherds running to tell the story.
May our lives, too, become songs of praise.
Amen.
Practice
This evening, take a moment to stand beneath the winter sky.
Breathe in the cold air.
Look up, as the shepherds did, and imagine the heavens bursting with light.
Whisper the words of the angels: “Do not be afraid.”
Let that promise settle deep in your soul.
Then, share one simple act of joy today—something that lets another person glimpse the light of Christ through you.
